Chafing Causes and Home Remedies

What is Chaffing?

Chafing is a condition in which the skin becomes sore, inflamed or irritated as a result of prolonged friction due to rubbing of the skin, body parts or clothes. It can be experienced by any person irrespective of the age but obese people are more likely to experience the same. People often mistake it for stretch marks. It is common among sports men and women, athletes and children. The major areas affected include armpits, inner thighs, groin area, nipples and back of the knees.

What causes Chaffing?

Chaffing occurs when constant friction takes place between skin and skin or skin and fabric. It may also be caused due to excessive loss of fluid from the body like while playing sports or exercising or during diarrhea. Sweaty conditions worsen the discomfort as moisture promotes the chances of bacterial and fungal infections. One may prevent Chafing or may reduce the discomfort by using some home remedies and exercising certain precautions.

Home Remedies and Precautions:

  • Aloe vera is an excellent home remedy. Apply freshly squeezed aloe vera juice from the leaves or apply the gel from the leaves to the affected areas. The healing will be quicker and it shall even repair the damage caused to the skin.
  • Cornstarch is another excellent home remedy. Rub some corn starch on the affected areas to avoid perspiration. This shall ease the movement as well and soak the sweat as and when it is excreted.
  • Mix some olive oil with oatmeal and apply on the chaffed region for half an hour. This mixture shall soothe the skin and prevent inflammation.
  • Use cotton clothes and undergarments while exercising. Stay away from synthetic materials. They allow the skin to breathe freely and does not trap the moisture.
  • Increase the quantity of fluid intake. Water helps restore the natural Ph balance of the body faster and flushes the toxins as well.
  • Certain nutrients like Vitamin A and C help retain the normal moisture level of the body.
  • Mix some Almond oil and aloe vera gel and apply on the affected areas. Vitamin E in almond oil shall speed up the healing.
  • Calendula oil has some properties that helps heal the skin faster. Apply some drops mixed with a carrier oil like coconut oil to the chaffed region.It has amazing anti bacterial and anti fungal properties as well.

It is also recommended that intake of vegetables like carrots, spinach, yams and parsley be increased to speed up the healing. These contain Vitamin A in its natural form that helps the body with the moisture levels and fighting skin infections. Avoid using chemical infused substances like sprays, deodorants, perfumes, creams on the affected areas. A break from exercising or the sport one plays to let the skin heal should speed up the healing process.
